Body Conversations Workshop: Intrigued? Read on.

By Theresa Weir, Dance Movement Psychotherapist, facilitator of Body Conversations

As a society, we spend a lot of time in our heads. In fact, I’ve often heard it said that the body is merely a taxi for the head! So, how do we begin a conversation with our body?

The first thing to recognise is that we can quite often bypass what the body is trying to communicate to us. So, how do we become more aware? Perhaps beginning a conversation with our body is simply a matter of pausing long enough to listen to what it has to say.

As a Dance Movement Psychotherapist (DMP), I have spent many years exploring how movement and developing a listening to the body can help us cultivate a different relationship with ourselves. My approach is informed by the idea of bodymind, emphasising a holistic view, where body and mind are intertwined.

I created Body Conversations as a workshop for personal development, combining meditation, movement, imagery and somatic connection to offer a different way of relating to ourselves.

The process begins with

a guided meditation, gently bringing our attention to the breath and body. From here, we move into explorations inspired by Laban Movement, taking time to connect with the environment and our own personal space (kinesphere), transitioning into movement by discovering different pathways through space, changing the quality of our movements and allowing different parts of the body to lead.

These playful explorations can open up new possibilities for movement, expression and creativity, with ourselves and each other.

We then

journey inward, drawing on the practice of Authentic Movement. Gently winding down to a pause, we allow ourselves to notice impulses to move as they arise, rather than planning what to do next. A movement might be as small as a flick of a finger or a shift of weight. Through this process, we begin to develop an inner witness — the ability to observe our experience with curiosity and without judgement.

Finally

There is time to write or draw in response to the experience, share reflections with the group and we draw everything together in a guided meditation to conclude the session.

For me, Body Conversations Workshop is about creating space to listen, explore and discover. The invitation to step away from familiar patterns, reconnect with the body and discover new ways of moving and expressing ourselves, can create increased self awareness, along with a heightened sense of attunement, creating a balance of body, mind and spirit, culminating in a renewed sense of self.

If this sounds like something you are interested to explore, join me on Saturday 21st November 2026 at 11am, at Barefoot Body and Soul.

I hope to see you there.

Theresa
