Stronger at 40+: Why It’s Never Too Late to Start Weight Training

Let’s talk about getting stronger. Not about squeezing into a smaller dress, chasing your younger self or punishing your body into submission. We’re talking about feeling strong, capable and confident in the body you have right now.

If you’re over 40, weight training could be one of the kindest things you do for your future self. And no, you don’t need to join a gym, lift enormous weights or pay for a personal trainer to enjoy the benefits!

We know all this. We are constantly told so. But just in case you’ve not yet got the memo, here is why it matters:

Strong bones, strong future

Like it or not, we are ageing and as we age, hormonal changes, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, can accelerate bone loss. Weight-bearing exercise and strength training help maintain bone density, supporting healthier bones as we get older. Building strength now can help us stay active and independent for years to come.

Muscle is your friend

We naturally lose muscle mass as we age, but strength training helps slow this process and build muscle at any stage of life. Stronger muscles support our joints, improve balance and make everyday activities easier.

Supporting your changing body

Perimenopause and menopause can bring changes in body composition, energy levels and how we feel in our bodies. Strength training can support metabolic health, help maintain muscle and improve insulin sensitivity. It may also help us manage weight as part of a balanced approach to movement, nutrition and rest.

But the benefits go beyond the physical. Regular exercise can support mood, sleep and overall well-being, helping us feel more grounded during times of change.

Confidence from the inside out

There’s something wonderfully empowering about discovering what your body can do.

You don’t have to look a certain way to be strong. And you certainly don’t need to wait until you feel fitter or more confident to begin.

As Nia people, we already know that there is so much joy to be found in moving for ourselves – in community. Why should weight training be a punishment? If that’s what is holding you back, come and try a class.

Where do you start?

At Barefoot Body and Soul, we believe movement should feel good. It’s not about competing, keeping up or pushing yourself beyond your limits. It’s about discovering what your body can do, finding joy in movement and feeling more at home in yourself.

Our Weighted Nia classes offer a welcoming, joyful way to explore strength training, using light 0.5kg wrist weights alongside your body’s natural resistance. We combine music, mindful movement and opportunities to build strength, stability and confidence, all in a supportive space where you can work at your own pace.

You don’t need to be a dancer, have any experience with weights or feel particularly fit to begin. You just need to bring yourself, exactly as you are.

Whether you’re navigating perimenopause, finding your feet after menopause or simply ready to try something new, you’re warmly welcome at Barefoot. So, come as you are, move in a way that feels right for you, and discover the pleasure of getting stronger together.

Your body has carried you this far. Let’s celebrate it, care for it and discover what’s possible next.

We’d love to welcome you to Barefoot Body and Soul. Find out more about our classes and book your place at barefootbodyandsoul.co.uk.

Strong, at every age

At 40, 60, 80 and beyond, we deserve to feel at home in our bodies. Weighted Nia is not about fighting the ageing process; it’s about supporting ourselves through it.

Your future self will thank you for it.
